Mr.
Viggiani designed what is considered to be one of the finest film storage vaults
in the world. Completed in 1995 and expanded in 1999, the George Eastman House’s
Louis B. Mayer Conservation Center was designed to safely store and preserve
nitrate films, including features, shorts, documentaries, and newsreels of
historic importance.
The facility boasts 12 explosion–proof
vaults and a sterile holding room. This fully computer controlled facility is
designed to keep film at the optimum temperature and humidity for film
longevity. Additionally, the facility automates and monitors the proper air
changes, to meet or exceed the National Film Preservation Association (NFPA)
climate control guidelines. Every system in the vault is computerized and has
redundancy. The facility designed by Mr. Viggiani also boasts a high-tech
security system which protects the building and its
contents.
Michael Viggiani has received accolades for
his facility designs, and strides in film preservation technology.
